"Lots of things are said about dragons.

Some believe they weren’t always as they are. Some say they were humans once, or something akin to one, and that they were blessed by the gods. That they were given a gift in order to be protectors, guardians, and that once upon a time they worked along royal lines to protect us against whatever great evil may rise.

There are many tales as to how they ended up as they did. Some tell that they grew corrupt and the Gods decided to punish them, one of a search for even greater power ending up warping their minds and destroying their humanity, and yet another speaks of them falling into the trap of an evil god...

Of course, however, there are plenty who believe they have just always been this way. Fire breathing beasts with no purpose but hoarding treasure and guarding it. The ultimate symbol of greed..."

“Excuse me, sir, but...you didn’t answer my question.”

“Eh? Oh. What was that again?”

“I need to know how to find one.”

One of legendary items and greatest symbols (a sword, a crown, a jewel of some sort) of the kingdom of Altheon was long ago lost to a dragon that made his nest in one of the realm’s mountains. No different from anything in it’s hoard, all attempts to retrieve it over time have resulted in death.

My character is well aware of this, however, she is desperate. Enough so that retrieving said item seems like the only option. A terrible power has come to light, horrible magic the likes of which no one has ever seen, and the only thing known for being able to destroy such evil is the legendary item that was lost.

Thus, she ventures facing the dragon in order to get it back. Well...not quite face it, that would be suicidal. If she could slip in and out while it wasn’t there, he wouldn’t be able to tell one little thing is missing from it’s piles and piles of treasure, right?

Alas, the dragon - you character - catches her. But somehow, unlike all other intruders, he doesn’t immediately kill her. Either he or she offers that in exchange for her life, she stay with him.

Whether we play this part out or not, over the time she stays, for the first time in a very, very long time, the dragon begins to feel something beyond the need to collect, pile and guard things. Begins to feel a range of other emotions he didn’t know before. He eventually rediscovers even a human form he’d forgotten he had. (Whether he tells her or not.)

Whether the girl tried to leave or not (though she would definitely not attempt to steal anything again), eventually he gives her what she came for in the first place and tells her to go.

Once she leaves, however, he can still feel. Loneliness, for one. He finds he misses her. He might also be a bit worried. He’d seen plenty of powerful items in his life, and what she sought...Well, tales of it’s power seemed greatly exaggerated. Whatever she hoped to do with it, he wasn’t sure it’d be that helpful.

After stewing with these new found emotions a while, he decides to do what seemed unthinkable until recently - leave. Find the girl again, possibly help her in the endeavor that drove her to steal from him in the first place.

Notes:

To clarify, setting wise, one of the main things in this is that dragons were once protectors of the land. Then for undetermined reasons (to be decided between my partner and I and then hopefully to come into play/get explored in RP) they became twisted, and these days people only know dragons for what they are now.

However, when a dragon makes a connection with a human, they begin to return to what they once were. How fast the dragon remembers (if he does at all) what and who he was before is also undetermined.

Now, as for this particular plot...The girl could be either a direct or more distant heir to the throne, or she could be something else. As for the one she is against, the person who has delved into some baaad, bad magic, it could be king/queen (her father/mother/older sibling if she is royalty), the ruler of a neighboring land, or someone else.
